We will be celebrating League City’s love of birds in a special event on Saturday, February 20 — the Tweet Heart Trail Walk! Bring your lovey-dovey or your whole flock for some feathered fun at the Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Clear Creek Nature Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In addition to enjoying Valentine’s Day fun, you can learn how to participate in the 24th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), a global citizen science project. This joint venture of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada provides valuable data to scientists about global bird populations just before the upcoming migration.
The GBBC is held each year during the second weekend of February; this year it will be February 12-15. To participate, just observe birds wherever you are for at least 15 minutes, and then report what you saw. This can be at the feeders in your backyard, a nearby park, or anywhere else that you enjoy birding. You can also see reporting from around the world in real-time online by visiting www.birdcount.org.
Join me for quick tips in Birding 101 sessions throughout the day to learn about the different ways you can participate, including through the Merlin and eBird apps. We would love to generate a lot of activity this year, and show everyone how great birding is in the League City area!
We also have a lot of other fun activities planned for the day! Follow the Tweet Heart Trail Walk to learn fun facts about bird courtship, play Nature Bingo, decorate your own birdhouse, create heart birdfeeders, and more!
See you there!
