Recycling FAQ
League City’s residential curbside recycling is taken to FCC Materials Reclamation Facility in Houston, where it is sorted. The MRF is a specialized plant that receives, separates, and prepares recyclable materials for other uses. The sorting process is fully automated and equipped with the latest material separation technologies, including optical and elliptical sorters, screen and cleaning systems for paper, cardboard and glass, EDDY current, and overband magnetic separators. This technology allows residents to put more materials in their recycling bins and less in landfills. Learn more about FCC Environmental Services.
Recycling bins that contain obvious non-recyclable waste will not be picked up by recycling trucks because the materials are not fit to be recycled. Residents can help by ensuring that non-recyclable materials DO NOT end up in your recycle bins. Currently, more than 90% of League City’s residential curbside recycling is sorted and processed for reuse at the Materials Reclamation Facility.
Rarely. AmeriWaste, our solid-waste provider, has reported that more than 90% of our curbside recycling is sorted for reuse at the FCC Materials Reclamation Facility. Currently, the only loads being diverted to the landfill are ones where a mechanical breakdown (such as a broken hydraulic hose) has taken place, which amounts to only a few a month.
No. Plastic bags jam up the recycling machinery. Place recyclable materials directly into your recycle bin.
Cardboard boxes that are not broken down could potentially contain non-recyclable waste materials, and therefore will not be picked up. Please break down your cardboard boxes so they can be recycled.
Some examples of recyclable materials include loose paper, emptied and rinsed aluminum and steel cans, emptied and rinsed glass bottles and jars, emptied and rinsed plastic water and soda bottles. Some examples of non-recyclable materials include food waste, Styrofoam, plastic bags, metal, and construction materials.
