[ARCHIVED] Tree Planting in the Winter Time

heather

While many people decide to wait for warmer weather to arrive before planting a new tree in their yard, League City Arborist Heather McKnights says it is best to plant during the winter time.

The rule of thumb for tree planting in our area, according to McKnight, is between Halloween and St. Patrick's Day. The reason for this being that the cooler temperatures will allow the tree to rest before the weather gets warmer. Planting a new tree during the scorching summer heat will not make it easy for the tree to survive.

If you do decide to plant a new tree during this time period, McKnight reminds you that it's important to make sure you water it regularly. Watering the newly planted tree twice a week will ensure the tree becomes properly established in its new home.

It is also important to consider your available space before choosing what tree you will plant.

McKnight's top tree choices to plant in League City are:

  • Oak Tree ( large option)
  • Chinese Elm Tree (medium option)
  • Savannah Holly (small/medium option)
  • American Holly (small/medium option)
  • Little Gem Magnolia (small option)
  • Dwarf Magnolia (small option)
