League City has received the 2019 Certified Scenic City Award from
Scenic Texas, a nonprofit group that works to enhance the beauty of the state’s
cities, especially for travelers. The recognition is part of the
group’s Scenic City Certification Program, a nationally recognized model that
provides communities with guidelines to design and develop public roads and
spaces.
Scenic Texas reviews interested cities’ infrastructure ordinances
compared to the program’s standards and gives official certification to cities
that rank high in landscaping, tree planting and sign regulation. The Scenic
City Certification Program is the only program of its kind in the United States
to devise a comprehensive set of model standards for the design and development
of public roadways and public spaces into one evaluation program.
Any Texas
city may apply to the Scenic City Certification Program for an objective review
of its existing municipal infrastructure ordinances as they relate to the model
standards. Assessment is points-based, and every city applicant receives a
detailed, scored evaluation that identifies both strengths and areas for
improvement. Official certification is earned by cities that score points in
the upper range and meet threshold standards for landscaping, tree planting and
sign regulation. Currently, the total number of certified scenic cities in Texas is 82.
League City received a gold ranking and will be recognized at the
Texas Municipal League’s annual conference Oct. 10 in San Antonio.
