[ARCHIVED] GO Bond Drainage Projects Update

Pre construction

Work is underway on the drainage projects approved by League City voters as part of the May 4 special election. Voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition A, which includes 21 drainage related projects totaling $73 million. Below are updates on several of the projects.

Bay Ridge Flood Reduction – Phase III: The goal of this project is to determine the most effective way to reduce ponding in the subdivision adjacent to Gum Bayou through improved drainage and storage capacity. Council awarded the design contract on May 28, 2019, and the first stage of this project is to survey the area in order to better understand the drainage options that the area’s topography will allow. At this time, the survey is approximately 90 percent complete.

Bay Ridge Flood Reduction – Phase IV :This project will analyze the existing conveyance and detention of Gum Bayou from League City Parkway to Dickinson Bayou.  Council awarded the design contract on June 25, 2019, and the hydrology and hydraulics (H&H) study of Gum Bayou is currently underway. The study will help evaluate the flow of water heading towards Dickinson Bayou and provide options for drainage improvement that could benefit the entire Gym Bayou Watershed.

Deer Ridge Drive Buyout and Overland Flow Improvements: The goal of this project is to improve drainage within the Oaks of Clear Creek subdivision, specifically Deer Ridge Drive, by reducing excessive flooding in the street during extreme storm events. Council approved a design contract on May 28, 2019 to begin the project. A hydrologic and hydraulics (H&H) study is underway and will identify whether drainage between homes and/or a home buyout is preferred.

Dove Meadows Detention Pond: The proposed improvements to this area include the construction of a 115 acre-foot detention pond between the east side of Dove Meadows and Bordon’s Gully (an acre-foot is defined as a unit of volume equal to a one acre area, one foot deep). Council awarded the design contract on May 28, 2019. The surveying for this project is scheduled to begin this month and is required in order to start the hydraulic modeling for sizing of the pond and any land purchases that may be necessary for construction. Research into potential permitting requirements is underway to facilitate overall project efficiency.

The City is currently reviewing design proposals for five additional projects and anticipates bringing those contracts to Council in late September/early October for approval.

Applications for grant funding on six projects have been turned into the General Land Office for CDBG-DR funding. The City expects  to hear back in early 2020 if the applications are approved for funding. The projects include:

  • FM 518 and Wesley Drive Drainage Improvements
  • Brittany Bay Subdivision Drainage Improvements
  • Landing Subdivision Drainage Improvements
  • Newport and Ellis Landing Subdivisions Drainage Improvements
  • Meadows Subdivision Drainage Improvements Phase I and II
  • Oaks of Clear Creek Detention Ponds
