If you're thinking of taking the kids out for a fun night of trick-or-treating around the neighborhood, the League City Police Department wants to remind you of some important tips and precautions to take so you and your family have a safe Halloween.
Tip #1 Safe costumes: When selecting your child's costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. If they plan on wearing a mask, make sure they can se out of it clearly. Light colored-costumes are preferred.
Tip #2 Stay visible: In case you might be out after sunset, carry glow sticks or flashlights with you to help see and be seen by drivers.
Tip #3 Form a group: Always make sure your trick-or-treaters are accompanied by an adult, especially if they are under the age of 12. If teens plan on going out without adult supervision, make sure you know what route they will be taking ahead of time.
Tip #4 Walk responsibly: Always walk on sidewalks or paths. Children should walk on direct routes with few street crossings. Also, remember to always look both ways before crossing the street. While you may have the right-of-way, drivers can be distracted.
Tip #5 Know which houses to approach: Only go up to homes with a porch light on and never go inside a stranger's home.
Tip #6 Inspect your candy: All the candy your kids collected may be irresistible when you arrive home, but it's important that you sort through all of it before eating. Throw out candy that is unwrapped or has torn wrapping. Homemade treats may look delicious, but unless you know where they came from, it's safest to toss them out.
Lastly, If you're looking for an indoor option to take your little ones trick-or-treating, the Helen Hall Library is hosting an all-day Halloween bash for children of all ages on October 31 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. In cooperation with the Teal Pumpkin Project, kids with food allergies can trick-or-treat at the Children’s Desk for a non-food treat, and there will be other stations offering candy treats as well. Beginning at 3 p.m., kids are in store for more Halloween fun, including crafts, and a showing of “Hotel Transylvania” (the first movie in the series).
