With hot summer days and recent humid weather, mosquitoes are finding the perfect conditions to breed and hang out in your backyard.
Check out some easy and effective ways you can keep mosquitoes away from your home.
Get Rid of Standing Water
Having accessible water sources around your home will draw in mosquitoes. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing or slow moving water. Some of the biggest culprits of water sources include unused tires, cans, pools and pool covers. Any plastic containers or ceramic pots for planting that are empty and collect water should be removed. Make sure to clean out your gutters as much as possible, and always keep an eye out for water build up around the house. Bird baths are also an easy target for mosquitoes!
Plant Mosquito-Repelling Plants
Citronella mosquito plants (Citrosa Geranium) are a natural mosquito repellent for your yard. This plant has a natural scent that mosquitoes hate! Other flowers and plants that can an also keep these insects away from the yard include marigolds, calendula, rosemary, mint and lemongrass. Plant them near your patio or deck for best results.
Change Your Lighting
Certain lights attract bugs, so opt for yellow lights instead of traditional white bulbs. The golden glow also makes for a more pleasant outdoor experience. Turn off your outdoor lights before going to bed, as well.
Light Citronella Candles
Repel insects while creating a nice ambience in your car by lighting citronella candles. The oil in the candle masks scents that are attractive to insects. Find these at your local home improvement or grocery store.
Keep Your Yard Under Control
Create a less appealing habitat for mosquitoes by minimizing any tall grass or limbs that cast shadows on your yard. Letting more sun in also helps dry up any wet spots. Fill any holes in your yard with topsoil and plant grass seed. Dips or uneven terrain can collect water and provide a potential breeding ground
