Over the next few months, League City employees will be visiting households across the city to drop off important information about flood insurance. Staff members are leaving door hangers at nearly 4,000 homes located in an AE flood zone, which is a flood zone that presents a 1% annual chance of flooding and a 26% chance over the life of a 30-year mortgage. Since these areas are prone to flooding, homeowners with mortgages from federally regulated lenders are required to purchase flood insurance.
Do I Need Flood Insurance?
Regardless of whether your home is in an AE flood zone or not, the League City Engineering Department encourages all League City homeowners to purchase flood insurance due to several bodies of water in our area that are prone to riverine flooding and storm surges—including Clear Lake and Clear Creek. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), just one inch of water can cause as much as $25,000 worth of damage to your home. For homes located in or near flood zones, the potential for loss is greater.

Basic homeowners' insurance policies do not cover damage from floods. Because League City participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), federally subsidized flood insurance is available to everyone in the City. Ask your agent for more details. Most policies are relatively inexpensive and can cover structural damage as well as damaged contents. However, there is a 30-day waiting period before the policy becomes effective, so don’t delay.
In addition, League City participates in the NFIP Community Rating System, a voluntary federal program that rewards communities that implement higher standards by providing discounts on flood insurance policies. Because of League City's efforts, homeowners located in an AE flood zone get a 25% discount on their flood insurance premium, while residents in other flood zones can get a 10% discount.
