[ARCHIVED] Recycling Center on Dickinson Ave. Closed

Recycling center with lots of heavy trash and hazardous waste everywhere

Recycling Center on Dickinson Ave. Closed

Illegal dumping and hazardous waste are contaminating recyclable materials.

The Recycling Center located at 1535 Dickinson Ave. closed on June 23. This closure is due to excessive illegal dumping and hazardous waste contamination, which are preventing recyclable materials from being properly recycled. View some of these violations in the video below. City staff monitored the facility regularly over the past six months and found that frequent violators included people who do not reside in League City and commercial businesses who use the facility as a dumping ground. During one two-hour monitoring period, staff discovered that six out of eight visitors to the site were from other cities.

The City is in the process of applying for an H-GAC grant that would provide for a staffed recycling facility in the future.

How Can I Recycle?

Residents can be assured that League City’s curbside recycling program is very successful, and we encourage continued recycling at home. Ninety percent of residential curbside recycling is being taken to the Material Recycling Facility (MRF) for processing, aside from instances when loads are contaminated by mechanical failure or other incidental reasons. Each month, around 339 tons of recycling from League City are brought to the MRF, according to data provided by Ameriwaste. This means residents are doing an excellent job sorting recyclable materials.
