Book Launch Event Details

The public is invited to the official book launch of “Hurricane Harvey: A Storm Like No Other” on Saturday, December 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Helen Hall Library. The book will be available for a special launch-day discounted price of $15 and special guest, Meteorologist John Dawson from Fox 26 News, will also be in attendance. After the event, the book will be available at the Friends of Helen Hall Library Book Store for $35.

The Inspiration Behind the Book
In 2010, the MAP writing group was created at Helen Hall Library—an offshoot of their popular Local Authors Hour program. The members of MAP are primarily retired authors who want to share the love of the writing process with their peers. When Hurricane Harvey hit, MAP members reached out to their families, friends, and the community for their stories. The process of putting “Hurricane Harvey: A Storm Like No Other” together involved recording the experiences of various community members and having those stories put into print. The League City community turned out in huge numbers to contribute their voices.

In the spring of 2022, MAP members Cathy Chapman, Patricia Vance, and Roberta Shepherd were tasked with contacting contributors, transcribing, and finalizing stories. Editor Chris Roper donated her time and worked tirelessly for a year editing and formatting the photos and text for publisher Bruce Moran of Total Recall Publications.

The book would not have happened without these valuable members of MAP: Harvey Cappel, Cathy Chapman, Mike Conwell, Dian Stirn Groh, Ellen Lancaster, Keyatha V. Loftis, Jackie May, Wali Huhammad, Harold Raley, R. M. Shepherd, Patricia Vance, Carolyn Ferrell Watts, Joyce Zongrone, and Local History Librarian Caris Brown.
